Cures from Qur’an and Sunnah

The Prophet (pbuh) said, "There is no disease that Allah has created, except that He also has created its treatment." (Bukhari Vol. 7, Book 71, Hadith 582)

Ajwa Dates

Used for: Effects of poison, and magic

Narrated Saud: The Prophet (pbuh) said, "If somebody takes some `Ajwa dates every morning, he will not be affected by poison or magic on that day till night." (Another narrator said seven dates). (Bukhari Vol. 7, Book 71, Hadith 663)

Rafi’ bin ‘Amr Al-Muzani said: “I heard the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) say: “Ajwah and the rock* are from Paradise.’” (Ibn Majah Vol. 4, Book 31, Hadith 3456)

Barley Broth (Talbina)

Used for: Calming the heart, Depression

Narrated 'Urwa: Aisha used to recommend at-Talbina for the sick and for such a person as grieved over a dead person. She used to say, "I heard Allah's Messenger (pbuh) saying, 'at-Talbina gives rest to the heart of the patient and makes it active and relieves some of his sorrow and grief.'" (Bukhari Vol. 7, Book 71, Hadith 593)

It was narrated from ‘Aishah that the Prophet (pbuh) said: “You should eat the beneficial thing that is unpleasant to eat: Talbinah,” meaning broth. If any member of the family of the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) was sick, the cooking pot would remain on the fire until one of two things happened, either the person recovered or died.” (Graded Hasan in Ibn Majah Vol. 4, Book 31, Hadith 3446)

Black Seed AKA Black Cumin (Nigella Sativa)

Used for: Everything except death

It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah that the Prophet (pbuh) said: “In the black seed is healing for every disease except death.” (Bukhari 5364; Muslim 2215)

Abu Hurairah narrated that he heard the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) say: “In black seed there is healing for every disease, except the Sam.” "Sam means death. And black seed is Shuwniz." (Ibn Majah Vol. 4, Book 31, Hadith 3447)

Used for: Respiratory and throat illnesses

Narrated Khalid bin Sa`d: We went out and Ghalib bin Abjar was accompanying us. He fell ill on the way and when we arrived at Medina he was still sick. Ibn Abi 'Atiq came to visit him and said to us, "Treat him with black cumin. Take five or seven seeds and crush them (mix the powder with oil) and drop the resulting mixture into both nostrils, for `Aisha has narrated to me that she heard the Prophet (pbuh) saying, 'This black cumin is healing for all diseases except As-Sam.' Aisha said, 'What is As-Sam?' He said, 'Death." (Bukhari Vol. 7, Book 71, Hadith 591)

"Qatadah said: "It was narrated to me that Abu Hurairah said:'Ash-Shuniz is a cure for every disease except As-Sam.' Qatadah said: "One takes twenty-one seeds daily, and puts them in a cloth, then infuses (water) and sniffs two drops in his right nostril, and one drop in the left. The second (day) two drops are sniffed in the left, and one drop in the right. The third (day) two drops in the right and one drop in the left." (Tirmidhi Vol. 4, Book 2, Hadith 2070)

Burnt Palm Leave Ash

Used for: Stopping Bleeding

Narrated Sahl bin Saud As-Sa`idi: When the helmet broke on the head of the Prophet (pbuh) and his face became covered with blood and his incisor tooth broke (i.e. during the battle of Uhud), `Ali used to bring water in his shield while Fatima was washing the blood off his face. When Fatima saw that the bleeding increased because of the water, she took a mat (of palm leaves), burnt it, and stuck it (the burnt ashes) on the wound of Allah's Apostle, whereupon the bleeding stopped. (Bukhari Vol. 7, Book 71, Hadith 618)

Camel Milk and Urine

Used for: Sickness from climate change

Narrated Anas: The climate of Medina did not suit some people, so the Prophet (pbuh) ordered them to follow his shepherd, i.e. his camels, and drink their milk and urine (as a medicine). So they followed the shepherd that is the camels and drank their milk and urine till their bodies became healthy. Then they killed the shepherd and drove away the camels. When the news reached the Prophet (pbuh) he sent some people in their pursuit. When they were brought, he cut their hands and feet and their eyes were branded with heated pieces of iron. (Bukhari Vol. 7, Book 71, Hadith 590)

Charity (Sadaqa / Zakat)

Used for: Everything, including head lice, and head injuries

Ka'b b. 'Ujra (ra) reported that the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) stood near him and lice were falling from his head. Thereupon he (the Holy Prophet) (pbuh) said: Do these vermins trouble you? I said: Yes. Thereupon he said: Then shave your head; and it was in connection with me that this verse was revealed:" Whoever among you is sick or has an ailment of the head, he (may effect) a compensation by fasting or alms or a sacrifice". He (the Holy Prophet pbuh, therefore) said to me: Observe fast for three days or give a quantity of alms enough to feed six needy persons or offer sacrifice (of an animal) that is available.” (Muslim Book 7, Hadith 2735)

Cupping

Used for: Migraine headaches, tonsillitis, and body pains, and many other things.

It was narrated from Ibn ‘Abbaas that, The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) was treated with cupping when he was in a state of ihraam on his head for a migraine that he was suffering. (Bukhari 5374; Muslim, 1202)

Narrated Ibn `Abbas: The Prophet (pbuh) was cupped while he was fasting. (Bukhari Vol. 7, Book 71, Hadith 597)

Narrated Anas: that he was asked about the wages of the one who cups others. He said, 'Allah's Messenger (pbuh) was cupped by `Abd Taiba, to whom he gave two Sa of food and interceded for him with his masters who consequently reduced what they used to charge him daily. Then the Prophet (pbuh) said, "The best medicines you may treat yourselves with are cupping and sea incense.' He added, "You should not torture your children by treating tonsillitis by pressing the tonsils or the palate with the finger, but use incense." (Bukhari Vol. 7, Book 71, Hadith 599)

Narrated Ibn `Abbas: The Prophet (pbuh) was cupped on his head for an ailment he was suffering from while he was in a state of Ihram at a water place called Lahl Jamal. Ibn `Abbas further said: Allah s Apostle was cupped on his head for unilateral headache while he was in a state of Ihram. (Bukhari Vol. 7, Book 71, Hadith 602)

Narrated Salmah: The maid-servant of the Messenger of Allah (pbuh), said: No one complained to the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) of a headache but he told him to get himself cupped, or of a pain in his legs but he told him to dye them with henna. (Abi Dawud Book 28, Hadith 3849)

Dua’

Used for: Everything

It was narrated that ‘Uthman bin Abul-‘As Thaqafi said: “I came to the Prophet (pbuh) and I was suffering pain that was killing me. The Prophet (pbuh) said to me: ‘Put your right hand on it and say: Bismillah, a’udhu bi’izzatil-lahi wa qudratihi min sharri ma ajidu wa uhadhiru. (In the Name of Allah, I seek refuge in the might and power of Allah from the evil of what I feel and what I fear),” seven times.’ I said that, and Allah healed me.” (Ibn Majah Vol. 4, Book 31, Hadith 3522)

It was narrated that Abu Hurairah said: “A scorpion stung a man and he did not sleep all the night. It was said to the Prophet (pbuh): ‘So- and-so was stung by a scorpion and he did not sleep all the night.’ He said: ‘If he had said, last night: A’udhu bikalimatil-lahit-tammati min sharri ma khalaq (I seek refuge in the Perfect Words of Allah from the evil of that which He has created), the scorpion sting would not have harmed him, until morning.’” (Ibn Majah Vol. 4, Book 31, Hadith 3518)

It was narrated that ‘Aishah said: “When the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) came to a sick person, he would make supplication for him, and would say: Adhhibil-bas, Rabban-nas, washfi Antash-Shafi, la shifa’a illa shifa’uka shifa’an la yughadiru saqama (Take away the pain, O Lord of mankind, and grant healing, for You are the Healer, and there is no healing but Your healing that leaves no trace of sickness).’” (Ibn Majah Vol. 4, Book 31, Hadith 3520)

Dust and Saliva

Used for: General

It was narrated from ‘Aishah that one of the things that the Prophet (pbuh) used to say for the sick person, with saliva on his finger (dipped in dust), was: “Bismillah, turbatu ardina, biriqati ba’dina, liyushfa saqimuna. Bi’dhni Rabbina (In the Name of Allah, the dust of our land mixed with the saliva of one of us, to cure our sick one by the permission of our Lord).” (Ibn Majah Vol. 4, Book 31, Hadith 3521)

Henna

Used for: Leg pains, pricks, cuts, and other injuries

Narrated Salmah: The maid-servant of the Messenger of Allah (pbuh), said: No one complained to the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) of a headache but he told him to get himself cupped, or of a pain in his legs but he told him to dye them with henna. (Abi Dawud Book 28, Hadith 3849)

Salma Umm Rafi’, the freed slave woman of the Messenger of Allah (pbuh), said: “The Prophet (pbuh) did not suffer any injury or thorn- prick but he would apply henna to it.” (Graded Da’if in Ibn Majah Vol. 4, Book 31, Hadith 3502)

Honey

Used for: Immune system, stomach and digestive system ailments, and many other things.

“Then, eat of all fruits, and follow the ways of your Lord made easy (for you).” There comes forth from their bellies, a drink of varying colour wherein is healing for men. Verily, in this is indeed a sign for people who think” (Qur’an 16:69)

Narrated Jabir bin `Abdullah: I heard the Prophet (pbuh) saying, "If there is any healing in your medicines, then it is in cupping, a gulp of honey or branding with fire (cauterization) that suits the ailment, but I don't like to be (cauterized) branded with fire." (Bukhari Vol. 7, Book 71, Hadith 587)

Narrated Abu Sa`id Al-Khudri: A man came to the Prophet (pbuh) and said, "My brother has some abdominal trouble." The Prophet (pbuh) said to him "Let him drink honey." The man came for the second time and the Prophet (pbuh) said to him, 'Let him drink honey." He came for the third time and the Prophet (pbuh) said, "Let him drink honey." He returned again and said, "I have done that ' The Prophet (pbuh) then said, "Allah has said the truth, but your brother's `Abdomen has told a lie. Let him drink honey." So he made him drink honey and he was cured. (Bukhari Vol. 7, Book 71, Hadith 588)

Indian aloes wood (al-‘ood al-hindi) & Sea Qust (kind of incense)

Used for: Throat ailments including tonsillitis, and pleurisy

It was narrated that Umm Qays bint Muhsin said: “I heard the Prophet (pbuh) say: “You should use Indian aloes wood for in it are seven cures.” (Bukhari 5368; Muslim 287)

Narrated Um Qais bint Mihsan: I heard the Prophet (pbuh) saying, "Treat with the Indian incense, for it has healing for seven diseases; it is to be sniffed by one having throat trouble, and to be put into one side of the mouth of one suffering from pleurisy." Once I went to Allah's Messenger (pbuh) with a son of mine who would not eat any food, and the boy passed urine on him whereupon he asked for some water and sprinkled it over the place of urine. (Bukhari Vol. 7, Book 71, Hadith 596)

Umm Qasis, daughter of Mihsan said: I brought my son to the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) while I had compressed his uvula for its swelling. He said: Why do you afflict your children by squeezing for a swelling in the Uvula ? Apply this Indian aloes wood, for it contain seven types of remedies, among them being a remedy for pleurisy. It is applied through the nose for a swelling of the uvula poured into the side of the mouth for pleurisy.” Abu Dawud said : By aloes wood he meant costus. (Graded Sahih in Abi Dawud Book 28, Hadith 3868)

Narrated Um Qais: I went to Allah's Messenger (pbuh) along with a son of mine whose palate and tonsils I had pressed with my finger as a treatment for a (throat and tonsil) disease. The Prophet (pbuh) said, "Why do you pain your children by pressing their throats! Use Ud Al-Hindi (certain Indian incense) for it cures seven diseases, one of which is pleurisy. It is used as a snuff for treating throat and tonsil disease and it is inserted into one side of the mouth of one suffering from pleurisy." (Bukhari Vol. 7, Book 71, Hadith 611)

Maimun Abu' Abdullah said: "I heard Zaid bin Arqam say: 'The Messenger of Allah (S.A.W) ordered us to use Qust Al-Bahri and oil to treat Pleurisy.'" (Graded Da’if in Tirmidhi Vol. 4, Book 2, Hadith 2079)

Kohl (Collyrium) / Antimony (ithmid) / Surma

Used for: Eye ailments, and growing eyelashes

Narrated Abdullah ibn Abbas: The Prophet (pbuh) said: Wear your white garments, for they are among your best garments, and shroud your dead in them. Among the best types of collyrium you use is antimony (ithmid): it clears the vision and makes the hair sprout. (Abi Dawud Book 28, Hadith 3869)

Salim bin ‘Abdullah narrated that his father said: “The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) said: ‘You should use antimony, for it improves the eyesight and makes the hair (eyelashes) grow.’” (Graded Hasan in Ibn Majah Vol. 4, Book 31, Hadith 3495)

Olives & Olive Oil

Used for: Pleurisy, and many other ailments.

It was narrated from ‘Umar that the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) said: “Season (your food) with olive oil and anoint yourselves with it, for it comes from a blessed tree.” (Ibn Majah Vol. 4, Book 29, Hadith 3319)

It was narrated that Zaid bin Arqam said: “The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) prescribed Wars (memecyclon tinctorium), Indian aloeswood and olive oil for pleurisy, to be administered through the side of the mouth.” (Graded Da’if in Ibn Majah Vol. 4, Book 31, Hadith 3467)

Ruqyah

Used for: Everything

Narrated `Abdul `Aziz: Thabit and I went to Anas bin Malik. Thabit said, "O Abu Hamza! I am sick." On that Anas said, "Shall I treat you with the Ruqya of Allah's Messenger (pbuh)?" Thabit said, "Yes," Anas recited, "O Allah! The Lord of the people, the Remover of trouble! (Please) cure (Heal) (this patient), for You are the Healer. None brings about healing but You; a healing that will leave behind no ailment." (Bukhari Vol. 7, Book 71, Hadith 638)

Narrated `Aisha: Whenever Allah's Messenger (pbuh) went to bed, he used to recite Surat-al-Ikhlas, Surat-al-Falaq and Surat-an- Nas and then blow on his palms and pass them over his face and those parts of his body that his hands could reach. And when he fell ill, he used to order me to do like that for him. (Bukhari Vol. 7, Book 71, Hadith 644)

Narrated Anas bin Malik: Allah's Messenger (pbuh) allowed one of the Ansar families to treat persons who have taken poison and also who are suffering from ear ailment with Ruqya. Anas added: I got myself branded cauterized) for pleurisy, when Allah's Messenger (pbuh) was still alive. Abu Talha, Anas bin An-Nadr and Zaid bin Thabit witnessed that, and it was Abu Talha who branded (cauterized) me. (Bukhari Vol. 7, Book 71, Hadith 617)

Narrated `Aisha: The Prophet (pbuh) ordered me or somebody else to do Ruqya (if there was danger) from an evil eye. (Bukhari Vol. 7, Book 71, Hadith 634)

Narrated Al-Aswad: I asked `Aisha about treating poisonous stings (a snake-bite or a scorpion sting) with a Ruqya. She said, "The Prophet (pbuh) allowed the treatment of poisonous sting with Ruqya." (Bukhari Vol. 7, Book 71, Hadith 637)

'Uthman bin Abi Al-'As narrated: "The Messenger of Allah (S.A.W) came to me while I had a pain that almost ruined me. So,the Messenger of Allah (S.A.W) said: 'Rub it with your right hand seven times and say A`udhu bi `Izzatillah Wa Qudratihi wa Sultanihi min sharri ma ajid." ("I seek refuge in Allah's might, power, an authority, from the evil of what I suffer.)" He said: "So I did it, and Allah removed what I had, and I never ceased telling my family and others to do it." (Tirmidhi Vol. 4, Book 2, Hadith 2080)

(Ruqyah with Qur’an and Mu’awwidhat)

Narrated `Aisha: During the Prophet's fatal illness, he used to recite the Mu'auwidhat (Surat An-Nas and Surat Al- Falaq) and then blow his breath over his body. When his illness was aggravated, I used to recite those two Suras and blow my breath over him and make him rub his body with his own hand for its blessings." (Ma`mar asked Az-Zuhri: How did the Prophet (pbuh) use to blow? Az-Zuhri said: He used to blow on his hands and then passed them over his face.) (Bukhari Vol. 7, Book 71, Hadith 631)

Narrated Ibn `Abbas: Some of the companions of the Prophet (pbuh) passed by some people staying at a place where there was water, and one of those people had been stung by a scorpion. A man from those staying near the water, came and said to the companions of the Prophet, "Is there anyone among you who can do Ruqya as near the water there is a person who has been stung by a scorpion." So one of the Prophet's companions went to him and recited Surat-al-Fatiha for a sheep as his fees. The patient got cured and the man brought the sheep to his companions who disliked that and said, "You have taken wages for reciting Allah's Book." When they arrived at Medina, they said, ' O Allah's Messenger (pbuh)! (This person) has taken wages for reciting Allah's Book" On that Allah's Messenger (pbuh) said, "You are most entitled to take wages for doing a Ruqya with Allah's Book." (Bukhari Vol. 7, Book 71, Hadith 633)

It was narrated from Anas that the Prophet (pbuh) allowed Ruqyah for the scorpion’s sting, the evil eye, and Namlah (sores or small pustules ulcers or sores on a person’s sides). (Ibn Majah Vol. 4, Book 31, Hadith 3516)

It was narrated that Jabir said: “There was a family among the Ansar, called Al ‘Amr bin Hazm, who used to recite Ruqyah for the scorpion sting, but the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) forbade Ruqyah. They came to him and said: ‘O Messenger of Allah! You have forbidden Ruqyah, but we recite Ruqyah against the scorpion’s sting.’ He said to them: ‘Recite it to me.’ So they recited it to him, and he said: ‘There is nothing wrong with this, this is confirmed.’” (Ibn Majah Vol. 4, Book 31, Hadith 3515)

It was narrated that ‘Aishah said: “The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) allowed Ruqyah for snakebites and scorpion stings.” (Ibn Majah Vol. 4, Book 31, Hadith 3517)

Sacrifice an Animal

Used for: Everything, including bites, stings, and magic

Narrated Ka`b bin Ujrah: The Prophet (pbuh) came to me during the period of Al-Hudaibiya, while I was lighting fire underneath a cooking pot and lice were falling down my head. He said, "Do your lice hurt you?" I said, "Yes." He said, "Shave your head and fast for three days or feed six poor persons or slaughter a sheep as a sacrifice:" (Bukhari Vol. 7, Book 71, Hadith 604)

Used for: Everything except death

Ibrahim bin Abu ‘Ablah said: “I heard Abu Ubayy bin Umm Haram, who had prayed with the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) facing both the Qiblah, saying: ‘I heard the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) say: “You should use senna and the Sannut, for in them there is healing for every disease, except the Sam.” It was said: “O Messenger of Allah, what is the Sam?” He said: “Death.” (One of the narrators) ‘Amr said: “Ibn Abu ‘Ablah said: the ‘Sannut is dill.” Others said: “Rather, it is honey that is kept in a skin (i.e., receptacle) used for ghee.” (Graded Hasan in Ibn Majah Vol. 4, Book 31, Hadith 3457)

Seena

Used for: Laxative, and anything else

Ibrahim bin Abu ‘Ablah said: “I heard Abu Ubayy bin Umm Haram, who had prayed with the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) facing both the Qiblah, saying: ‘I heard the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) say: “You should use senna and the Sannut, for in them there is healing for every disease, except the Sam.” It was said: “O Messenger of Allah, what is the Sam?” He said: “Death.” (One of the narrators) ‘Amr said: “Ibn Abu ‘Ablah said: the ‘Sannut is dill.” Others said: “Rather, it is honey that is kept in a skin (i.e., receptacle) used for ghee.” (Graded Hasan in Ibn Majah Vol. 4, Book 31, Hadith 3457)

It was narrated that Asma’ bint ‘Umais said: “The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) said to me: ‘What do you use as a laxative?’ I said: ‘The Shubrum (spurge – Euphorb).’ He said: (It is) hot and powerful.’ Then I used senna as a laxative and he said: ‘If anything were to cure death, it would be senna. Senna is a cure for death.’” (Graded Da’if in Ibn Majah Vol. 4, Book 31, Hadith 3461)

Shaving the head, fasting, and feeding the poor

Sheep Tail Fat

Used for: Sciatica (lower back pains), Hip and leg pains

Anas bin Malik said: “I heard the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) saying: ‘The cure for sciatica is the fat from the tail of a Bedouin sheep (or wild sheep), which should be melted and divided into three parts, one part to be taken each day on an empty stomach.’” (Ibn Majah Vol. 4, Book 31, Hadith 3463)

Shubrum (Euphorbia / Zilla Spinosa / Spiny Fodder)

Used for: Laxative

It was narrated that Asma’ bint ‘Umais said: “The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) said to me: ‘What do you use as a laxative?’ I said: ‘The Shubrum (spurge – Euphorb).’ He said: (It is) hot and powerful.’ Then I used senna as a laxative and he said: ‘If anything were to cure death, it would be senna. Senna is a cure for death.’” (Graded Da’if in Ibn Majah Vol. 4, Book 31, Hadith 3461)

Siwak / Miswak

Used for: Cleansing the mouth of bacteria

'Abdur-Rahman bin Abu 'Atiq said: "My father told me: 'I heard 'Aishah say, (narrating) from the Prophet (pbuh): "Siwak is a means of purification for the mouth and is pleasing to the Lord." (Graded Sahih in Nasa’I Vol. 1, Book 1, Hadith 5)

Truffles

Narrated Sa`id bin Zaid: I heard the Prophet (pbuh) saying, "Truffles are like Manna (i.e. they grow naturally without man's care) and their water heals eye diseases." (Bukhari Vol. 7, Book 71, Hadith 609)

‘Amr bin Huraith said: “I heard Sa’eed bin Zaid bin ‘Amr bin Nufail narrating from the Prophet (pbuh) that: ‘Truffles are a type of manna that Allah sent down to the Children of Israel, and their water is a healing for eye (diseases).’” (Ibn Majah Vol. 4, Book 31, Hadith 3454)

Warss (Memecyclon Tinctorium AKA Kamala), Olive Oil and Indian Aloeswood

Used for: Pleurisy

It was narrated that Zaid bin Arqam said: “The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) prescribed Wars (memecyclon tinctorium), Indian aloeswood and olive oil for pleurisy, to be administered through the side of the mouth.” (Graded Da’if in Ibn Majah Vol. 4, Book 31, Hadith 3467)

Water

Used for: Fever

Narrated Nazi': `Abdullah bin `Umar said, "The Prophet (pbuh) said, 'Fever is from the heat of Hell, so put it out (cool it) with water.' " Nafi` added: `Abdullah used to say, "O Allah! Relieve us from the punishment," (when he suffered from fever). (Bukhari Vol. 7, Book 71, Hadith 619)
